Outdoor Winter Hazards For Cats

January 15, 2022

Does anyone have a kitty or two? If so, we can’t stress enough how important it is to keep her safe and sound indoors, especially in winter. Fluffy may be an adventurous spirit, but she’s still very small and vulnerable. Things like weather and cars pose threats all year long to outdoor cats, but winter adds a few more dangers. A local vet lists a few of them in this article.

Darkness

At this time of year, it get dark pretty early. These condition pose an increased risk from cars or traffic for your furry friend. It can also make it more difficult for her to spot potential threats.

Temperatures

Cold weather is still dangerous for Fluffy, even with her natural fur coat on. Plus, given that your pet is so close to the ground, it only takes a few inches of snow before she’s tummy-deep. Frostbite is more common in cats than many people think. Kitties, in particular, are most susceptible at the tips of their tails and ears, and sometimes on their legs and paws.

Increased Risk Of Getting Lost

Kitties usually stay within a certain distance from home. Fluffy still may venture further than you know. Landmarks and scents can be hidden by snow and ice, making it harder for your feline companion to find her way home.

Chemicals

Many chemicals we use in the winter are toxic to cats. Antifreeze, for example: it’s very poisonous to our feline pals. And many types have an appealing taste to kitties. There are pet-friendly versions available, though, even if you use these, your neighbor may not.

Entrapment

Kitties always like to explore crannies and nooks. If Fluffy happens to take shelter in a neighbor’s shed during a storm, she may not be able to get out.

Predators

If you live in a rural area, your feline buddy may face increased risk from predators … particularly from those looking down from above. The lack of foliage and white snow can make Fluffy easier to spot from the sky.

Tips

If you do let your furry pal out, or if your kitty makes a dash out the door any time she has a chance, be sure Fluffy has access to an emergency shelter. This can be as simple as a storage tote with a hole cut in one side.
