Dr. Mari Bessell
Dr. Mari Bessell first became interested in medicine because of her mother, who works as an X-ray technologist in the human healthcare profession. Dr. Bessell always knew that she gravitated more toward the animal care field, though. Why not get the best of both worlds, she thought, by satisfying her passions for science and medicine while caring for pets at the same time? That’s why Dr. Bessell became a veterinarian!

Dr. Bessell grew up in the small town of Hampton, Ontario and was still in high school when she began volunteering at an animal hospital in Bowmanville. Next, she moved to Guelph to complete her undergraduate studies in zoology, then continued on to complete her Doctorate at the Ontario Veterinary College. Dr. Bessell graduated in the spring of 2019, and moved to Dundas in May of that year to join the team here at Waterdown Animal Hospital. She’s been caring for the area’s pets and animal owners ever since!

As a veterinarian, Dr. Bessell loves working with her hands during surgical procedures, and she’s also fond of radiology. Preventative medicine holds a special place in her heart—for her, nothing is more rewarding than catching patients’ health issues before they present a problem!

Away from work, Dr. Bessell can be found reading mystery novels, horseback riding—she’s ridden for almost 20 years, and even used to volunteer as an announcer at horse shows when she wasn’t participating as a contender!—and spending time with her own pets at home. She lives with her boyfriend, James, who is currently working on his PhD at McMaster University, and two cats: Charlie, whose favorite food is popcorn; and Simba, who seems to never tire of running around the house at full speed. Dr. Bessell also shares her life with Chewy, a thoroughbred gelding who will do anything for a carrot.
